Tom Jacques and Eunsil Noh met recently on Tom’s first trip to South Korea. Their meeting was marked by instant musical chemistry and camaraderie. Their duo project, Oh ! Pebbles, consists of their complimentary singular practices in musical improvisation. Their sound centers on fusing minimalistic noise coming from mundane objects triggered by vibrating mini-motors and the re-actualisation of the storied history of voice art in the Pansori tradition. This combination, often supported by harmonium drones, leads to a theatrical, mysterious and enveloping live performance experience, aiming to create visceral reactions for the audience.

Noh Eunsil is a performer, sound artist, and vocalist who is building her own artistic language through the medium of the voice. After majoring in pansori and art history at Korea National University of Arts, she studied abroad in the Czech Republic and has been presenting performances that combine pansori’s theatricality with objects in Korea and abroad. Recently, she has been experimenting and trying audiovisual performances using voice as a material to surpass her expressive limits, and she has been trying sound performances and improvised collaborations based on her concept of voice art. She is looking forward to the day when she will be able to communicate the raw energy and beauty of the voice with the audience, and is gradually expanding the world of voice expression.

Tom Jacques‘ artistic approach evolves between composition, improvisation, interpretation and the design of sound devices. His works are rooted in a variety of practices, including music, sound installation, lutherie, digital art, craft and visual arts. The fabrication of new devices is at the center of his compositional and improvisational approach. Choosing to stay in his home town at the beginning of his career was an act of resistance to rural exodus. Today, he is still developing the majority of his projects in the Bas-Saint-Laurent (Quebec, CAN), convinced that contemporary and experimental art must exist outside the major urban centers and develop in a singular way.

Tom Jacques et Eunsil Noh se sont récemment rencontrés lors du premier voyage de Tom en Corée du Sud. Leur rencontre a été marquée par une alchimie musicale instantanée et une camaraderie évidente. Leur projet en duo, Oh! Pebbles, repose sur leurs pratiques singulières et complémentaires en improvisation musicale. Leur univers sonore fusionne des bruits minimalistes issus d’objets du quotidien activés par de mini-moteurs vibrants, avec une réactualisation de l’histoire riche de l’art vocal dans la tradition du Pansori. Cette combinaison, souvent soutenue par des nappes d’harmonium, donne lieu à une performance live théâtrale, mystérieuse et enveloppante, visant à provoquer des réactions viscérales chez le public.

Noh Eunsil est une performeuse, artiste sonore et vocaliste qui développe son propre langage artistique à travers la voix. Après avoir étudié le Pansori et l’histoire de l’art à la Korea National University of Arts, elle a poursuivi ses études en République tchèque et présente depuis des performances mêlant la théâtralité du Pansori à l’utilisation d’objets, en Corée et à l’international. Récemment, elle a exploré la performance audiovisuelle en utilisant la voix comme matériau pour dépasser ses limites expressives. Elle expérimente également des performances sonores et des collaborations improvisées basées sur son concept d’art vocal. Elle aspire à communiquer l’énergie brute et la beauté de la voix avec le public et cherche continuellement à étendre l’univers de l’expression vocale.

Tom Jacques évolue entre composition, improvisation, interprétation et conception de dispositifs sonores. Son travail s’ancre dans des pratiques variées, allant de la musique à l’installation sonore, en passant par la lutherie, l’art numérique, l’artisanat et les arts visuels. La création de nouveaux dispositifs est au cœur de son approche compositionnelle et improvisée. Au début de sa carrière, il a fait le choix de rester dans sa ville natale en résistance à l’exode rural. Aujourd’hui encore, il développe la majorité de ses projets dans le Bas-Saint-Laurent (Québec, Canada), convaincu que l’art contemporain et expérimental doit exister en dehors des grands centres urbains et s’y développer de manière singulière.
